Job Title: Data Scientist

Specialty Areas: Computational Linguistics; General Linguistics

Description:

Data Scientist - Advanced Analytics
£competitive
London

Department Description:

Advanced Analytics is at the forefront of helping the Bank make creative use
of new data sources and data science techniques to promote the public good. We
are a core part of the Bank’s research efforts, and produce analysis that
informs policymaking and improves operational efficiency.

Our main remit is to develop and apply techniques for working with numerical
micro-data and text, including what is sometimes called ‘Big Data’. These data
offer the possibility of getting richer insight on regulated firms, the wider
economy and the Bank of England itself, facilitating more targeted and timely
action on key issues.

Our work involves working across the whole of the organisation, as well as
frequently partnering with external academics, other policymaking bodies and
private-sector experts. We are keen to enhance the data at the disposal of the
Bank and the public, merging datasets for internal use, and making more of the
Bank’s data available to the public.

Brief Description:

This job is an exciting opportunity to work at the intersection of finance,
public policy and data science. The successful applicant will have particular
experience in quantitative text mining/computational linguistics, and more
general interest in all aspects of data science and different types of data.

Detailed Description:

As a member of the Advanced Analytics team you will:

- Help to frame and deliver text mining projects
- Identify relevant textual sources
- Document the techniques and data used in projects so the analysis can be
replicated, either directly or for similar projects
- Communicate results to our stakeholders in a clear, non-technical but
rigorous way
- Keep abreast of the latest developments in the fields of computational
linguistics/natural language processing, and share that knowledge with Bank
colleagues
- Work with colleagues in Advanced Analytics on other projects involving
numerical data

Job Requirements:

Essential

- Experience using analytical scripting languages e.g. R/Python, especially
relevant text mining packages
- Experience extracting and cleaning text in different formats e.g. HTML, pdf
files
- Experience with at least one of the following: sentiment analysis, word
sense disambiguation, word embedding, topic models
- Ability to visualise text effectively
- Solid knowledge of English grammar and rhetorical devices
- Good communication skills with the ability to clearly explain complex
concepts in simple language, both verbally and in writing
- Creativity - an aptitude for making connections across different projects
and disciplines
- Good team player
- Ability to manage multiple projects and competing demands
- Interest in policy issues

Desirable:

- Knowledge of the wider universe of proprietary and open-source text mining
software - their strengths/weaknesses
- Relationships with intellectual leaders in the fields of natural language
processing/computational linguistics
- Knowledge of economics, finance and/or central banking
- Track record of research publications
- Degree in linguistics, statistics, data science or relevant related
discipline
- Evidence of ongoing learning in data science or related field
