Subject: Crosslinguistic Pragmatics

Full Title: Crosslinguistic Pragmatics
Short Title: CLIP

Date: 25-Jan-2017 - 27-Jan-2017
Location: Berlin, Germany
Contact Person: Uli Sauerland
Meeting Email: uli at alum.mit.edu

Linguistic Field(s): General Linguistics; Language Documentation; Pragmatics; Semantics; Typology

Call Deadline: 10-Oct-2016

Meeting Description:

Cross-linguistic work in semantics has grown substantially in recent years.
Pragmatics has lagged behind, perhaps because it widely assumed to derive from
universal principles of human rationality despite the early critique of the
universality assumption by E. O. Keenan (1976). Investigating pragmatics
cross-linguistically also can shed light on current proposals to
conventionalize aspects of pragmatics. Finally, studying pragmatics
cross-linguistic makes it possible to see how pragmatic principles interact
with the grammatical properties of different languages.

Invited Speakers:

Napoleon Katsos, Cambridge University
Lisa Matthewson, University of British Columbia

Call for Papers:

We seek additional contributions that advance pragmatic theory by adopting a
cross-linguistic perspective or by relying on data from understudied
languages. The cross-linguistic perspective often requires careful
methodological considerations including formal experiments to ascertain that
comparisons are valid. Therefore experiment-based contributions are
specifically encouraged.

We ask that contributors submit abstracts of their planned 30 min talks (+ 15
min for questions). Abstracts should be one page (A4 or letter) long plus an
extra page for linguistic data, figures, and references. Abstracts should be
anonymous and consist of a single PDF file. Abstract submission and review
will be exclusively handled through the Easychair system at the following
link:

https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=crosslingprag2017

The submission deadline is October 10, 2016 and we hope to finalize the
program by early November.
