Description:

Ph.D./M.A. scholarships in an international research project

The Emergent Grammar of Clause-Combining from a Cross- Linguistic Perspective
- A Contribution to Pragmatic Typology

An Interactional Linguistics project funded by the Israel Science Foundation
focusing on complex clausal structures in spoken discourse will begin October
1, 2016, headed by Professor Yael Maschler. This four-year project will take
place at the Department of Hebrew, University of Haifa, Israel, in cooperation
with colleagues at universities in Switzerland, Sweden, and Finland.

Ph.D. and M.A. scholarships are available for graduate students wishing to
participate in all stages of the project:

- Video-recording, transcribing and coding casual face-to-face Hebrew
interactions.
- Culling, analyzing and classifying specific complex clausal structures and
the actions implemented by them in the above corpus, as well as in the Haifa
Corpus of Spoken Hebrew (Maschler 2016).
- Participating in a comparative study with parallel research teams abroad
working on French, Swedish, and Estonian data.

The participating student will write a thesis based on part of this research.

Requirements:

- Academic background in linguistics, preferably in discourse and grammar
and/or interactional linguistics
- Native or near-native knowledge of Hebrew.
