Description:

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at UC Davis invites applications for
a tenure-track position as Director of Spanish for Native Speakers Language
Program at the Assistant Professor level, in Spanish Applied linguistics and
language pedagogy. Expertise in Spanish as a heritage language and
Latino/Chicano culture in addition to experience in administering a language
program for heritage speakers preferred. Duties include supervising several
graduate students who teach the lower division heritage language (SPA 31-33)
courses as well as coordinating the undergraduate heritage language tutors (20
to 25 mentors).

Research and teaching responsibilities will include courses in the program of
Spanish for Native speakers as well as an active participation in the
department’s language and culture research group. The successful candidate
will lead and coordinate an established Spanish for Native Speakers program
serving a culturally and ethnically diverse student body as well as teach
graduate and undergraduate courses in Spanish linguistics, teaching
methodology and upper division courses in the area of Spanish in the United
States and Latino/Chicano culture (SPA 117, 174, 176 or 177 or similar
courses). Teaching responsibilities will include language courses at all
levels as well as graduate and undergraduate courses in Spanish linguistics
and language pedagogy. Applicants should possess native or near-native
language competency in Spanish and English; knowledge of Portuguese is also
desirable. They should have an expert understanding of applied linguistics and
Latino/Chicano culture, and a strong commitment to undergraduate education.
Applicants must demonstrate exceptional promise as scholars and teachers, and
have the ability to lead an established language program of Spanish for Native
Speakers with graduate students and a large undergraduate group of instructor
aides. The successful applicant will be able to contribute to the shared
governance and intellectual life of the department and the larger UC Davis
community. A Ph.D. in Spanish, SLA, or any other related field is required and
must be in hand prior to the first day of classes on September 20, 2017.
