Meeting Description:

Sources and Functions of Speech Variation: Disentangling the role of
biological and social factors

What are the mechanisms by which speakers converge on a shared interpretation
of vocal productions, even though physiological and contextual differences can
be very large? The working hypothesis is that variation should be reduced to
two key explanatory factors: the first one comprises the anatomical
configuration and functional co-organization of the vocal organs, as well as
the biological basis of hearing and perception; the second comprises the
socio-indexical functions of variation, which are adopted by the speaker to
convey social and interactional, as well as linguistic, meanings. The
individual and social dimensions are therefore intertwined and give rise to
the core systematic variation that decades of experimental research in speech
sciences have helped to bring to light.

The conference aims to discuss, in an informal atmosphere, empirical and
theoretical questions about aspects of individual and social variation in
speech, such as (but not limited to):

- How can the speaker manipulate the spectrum of biologically determined
articulatory options to vary her/his speech style according to social,
communicative-interactional, and emotional needs?
- What are the social uses of dialects? How many ‘dialects’ and how many
‘styles’ can be owned and used by the individual in speech communication? What
role is played by speech variation in the contemporary dynamics of standard
vs. non-standard languages and in the diffusion of sound change?
- Are the instruments currently used in experimental phonetics sensitive
enough to detect variation in its inter-individual, social, and communicative
dimensions? What contribution can be provided by technological innovations in
the articulatory domain and by new techniques of socio-perceptual analysis?

Following the tradition of AISV conferences, the programme will also include
open sessions on any aspect of speech science research. There will also be a
special session on Stuttering and Phonetic Theory chaired by C. Zmarich.

The languages of the conference are Italian and English. Power Point
presentations and posters should be written in English.
