Linguistic Field(s): Philosophy of Language; Pragmatics; Psycholinguistics; Semantics

Call Deadline: 05-Mar-2017

Meeting Description:

The Leibniz-Zentrum Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft (ZAS) and the University of
Potsdam are pleased to announce the 22nd Sinn und Bedeutung (SuB) conference.
SuB has in recent years emerged as the biggest venue for formal semantics and
pragmatics representing the full breadth of the field, and we aim to maintain
this tradition.

Invited Speakers:

Amy Rose Deal (Berkeley)
Danny Fox (MIT)
Louise McNally (UPF)
Philippe Schlenker (IJN Paris / CNRS)

The conference will feature a special session on Semantics and Natural Logic,
which will gather philosophers and linguists to explore the interaction
between language and natural logic.

Invited Speakers for Special Session:

Márta Abrusán (IRIT Toulouse / CNRS)
Hannes Leitgeb (LMU Munich)

There will also be a satellite workshop on Microvariation in Semantics on
September 6, 2017 (to be announced separately).

The main session of SuB will take place at the modern Griebnitzsee campus of
the University of Potsdam, easily reached from the center of Berlin. Other
events will be in central Berlin.

Call for Papers:

For the Main Session, we invite abstract submissions on topics pertaining to
natural language semantics, pragmatics, the syntax-semantics interface,
psycholinguistic studies related to meaning, and the philosophy of language.
Talks will be 45 (35+10) minutes in length. There will also be a poster
session. Poster presenters will have the opportunity to give short ‘lightning
talks’ to introduce their topic to the audience.

For the Special Session 'Semantics and Natural Logic', we invite submissions
for 45-minute talks that explore the interaction between language and natural
logic, addressing questions including the following:

(i) Is there such a thing as natural logic, a component of the mind/brain that
we might call logical?
(ii) What is the relation between natural languages and natural logic, and
what are the basic properties of natural logic?
(iii) How do we distinguish inferences derived by natural logic+language from
inferences derived using other cognitive systems?

Abstracts should contain original research that, at the time of submission,
has neither been published nor accepted for publication. One person can submit
at most one abstract as sole author and one as co-author or two co-authored
abstracts, for the Main Session and Special Session combined. Authors will be
asked to specify at the time of submission whether they wish their abstract to
be considered for the Main and/or the Special Session, and for a talk and/or a
poster.

Submissions should be anonymous and should not reveal the identities of the
authors in any form. Abstracts must not exceed two pages (letter size or A4
paper, 2.5cm or 1 inch margins on all sides, 12 point font), including
examples and references. Abstracts must be submitted electronically in PDF
format via EasyChair.
