Meeting Description:

The Department of Modern Languages at Télécom Bretagne (France) and the
University of Padua (Italy) are very pleased to welcome abstract submission
for the GLAT International Conference 2016 which will take place in Padua on
May 17-19, 2016.

The conference will focus on mediation and intercultural dialogue.

Mediation can be seen as a “unifying concept, bringing together professional
and pedagogical practices from every aspect of communication”, to quote John
Humbley, and also as a concept representing a “process of ethical
communication”, as defined by Michèle Guillaume-Hofnung. Through mediation,
one can thus bring together practice and professions, as well as social
activities and human relations.

Mediation has had growing significance in the heterogeneous societies of
today, where the opposition of viewpoints, visions, needs and interests among
minority and majority groups, e.g. between immigrant and established
communities, represent more and more frequent scenarios. Institutions are not
always able to provide quick responses to daily situations of incomprehension
and of rejection of alterity (linguistic, physical, psychological, sexual and
social), degradation, urban violence, or extremism.

Mediation has proven to be the most immediate, most flexible instrument to
intervene in such situations. Mediation makes it possible to make the implicit
explicit, to encourage listening and to engage in dialogue with others. This
mediation is made possible by a variety of mediators (citizen, cultural,
neighborhood, street, city, family, institutional, judicial, linguistic,
health, educational, social, etc.), as well as by communication facilitators
(social workers, researchers, teachers, psychologists, forum moderators,
special interest groups, online or offline, etc.).

In order for mediation to take place, the mediator and the people concerned
must agree on the words they use. The latter must also recognize the mediator
as a third party with respect to their world views. The mediator must
understand that certain words reveal personal values and that a particular
wording can calm minds and inspire trust. Training must be available to allow
mediators to master not only the theoretical principles of mediation, but also
the linguistic interactions.

We hope to explore this theme with you in a spirit of conviviality and
multilingualism.

2nd Call for Papers:

Given the interdisciplinary and pluridisciplinary of the theme, the organizers
welcome submissions on the variety of mediation situations and practices.

Possible topics include but are not limited to:

- theoretical and practical relationship between law, mediation and
intercultural dialogue;
- analysis of the philosophical and epistemological elements that make it
possible to reach a definition of mediation and the identification of the
phases that characterize this process based on one or more practical examples;
- examination of a real situation of mediation in which the creation or
recovery of the intercultural dialogue involved is the main issue;
- conversation analysis of specific mediation situations and authentic data;
- lexical and terminological studies based on authentic data;
- sociolinguistic studies on plurilingualism and the representation of
language and alterity, with reference to the concept of mediation and/or real
mediation situations;
- introduction of a didactic approach and/or proposition for training in
mediation, principles of mediation, or intercultural dialogue (training with
specific objectives);
- use of a didactic approach and/or experiment and/or strategy for mediation
(e.g. diverse student populations, interdisciplinarity, competency-based
approach, languages in teaching, language teaching, use of different tools);
the emergence of new mediation figures and practices favoring dialogue over
social networks and, more generally, on the internet;
- the theme of mediation and information technologies, insofar as our world,
in its massive digital transition, is also transforming practices, traditions,
means and norms;
- a research project (in progress or completed) on the links between mediation
as a(n ethical) communicative process and intercultural dialogue, particularly
highlighting the methodological specificities and the impact (desired or
actually obtained).
