Job assignments

The position includes mainly teaching and supervision of students at first-
and second-cycle level, in both freestanding courses and study programmes, on
campus or online. In addition, the holder of the position will be expected to
participate in the development of courses and study programmes, within the
subject area and in adjacent fields. Research activities will also be
required. As the successful applicant will be expected to participate broadly
in the Department’s activities, other duties may be required as well.

Eligibility

The qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Sections 3–4
of the Higher Education Ordinance and in the University of Gothenburg’s
Appointments Procedure. To be eligible for the position, the applicant must
hold a doctoral degree and have demonstrated teaching expertise.

Assessment

The qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Sections 3–4
of the Higher Education Ordinance and in the University of Gothenburg’s
Appointments Procedure.

In the assessment of qualifications, equal attention will be given to
pedagogical and scholarly competence in the relevant subject area. Special
attention will be given to documented qualifications within the following
areas:

- Teaching expertise, demonstrated through experience of planning and
execution of educational activities, including supervision/tutoring and
examination.
- Scholarly competence, which will be assessed in relation to degree of
originality, international orientation and future outlook.
- Qualifications regarding cooperation with the surrounding community.
- Ability to lead and administer teaching activities (for example background
as a course director/coordinator).
- Strong proficiency in Japanese.

Ability to teach in Swedish or other Scandinavian language is an advantage.
Ability to teach in English is also an advantage, yet to a lesser extent.

The recruitment process may also include trial lectures and interviews.

Additional information

According to the University of Gothenburg’s Appointments Procedure, an
applicant who has not completed formal training in teaching and learning in
higher education of at least 15 higher education credits, and who cannot be
deemed to have acquired the corresponding knowledge in any other way, shall
undergo such training during the first year of employment.

The successful applicant will be expected to demonstrate extensive physical
presence at the Department as well as regular participation in its work.
