Description:

Postdoctoral Fellow in Computational Pragmatics

Professors Marie-Catherine de Marneffe and Judith Tonhauser from the
Department of Linguistics at The Ohio State University are inviting
applications for a post-doctoral fellow in the field of computational
pragmatics, beginning August 15, 2016. This postdoc is funded through the
Postdoctoral Partnership Initiative of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation
(http://www.acls.org/programs/ppi/) and the Discovery Themes Initiative in the
Arts and Humanities at The Ohio State University
(https://discovery.osu.edu/about/news/investing-in-our-future.html).

The postdoctoral fellow is expected to conduct research on natural language
semantics and pragmatics through the application of corpus-based,
experimental, fieldwork or computational methods, in collaboration with
Professors de Marneffe and Tonhauser. The postdoctoral fellow will be housed
in the Department of Linguistics, a vibrant research community with strengths
across a wide range of linguistics sub-disciplines, and strong connections to
the Departments of Computer Science, Psychology and Philosophy. The
postdoctoral fellow will also have the opportunity to interact and collaborate
with other members of the Buckeye Language Network
(http://buckeyelanguagenetwork.osu.edu/).

The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in Linguistics, Computer Science or a
related field (in hand by the appointment date), background in natural
language semantics and pragmatics, and research experience with corpus-based
methods, experimental methods, fieldwork methods or statistical modeling.

The postdoctoral fellow will be appointed initially for 12 months beginning in
Fall 2016. The position is renewable for a second year. The postdoctoral award
will cover a stipend ($50,000 per year), benefits, some relocation costs,
computing equipment and support, and a small research fund.

The teaching load is one course per semester. The postdoctoral fellow is also
expected to engage with undergraduate students outside of the classroom and
develop a plan for meeting regularly with other fellows and faculty in the
college and the university.

Applications should consist of the following:

- Three-page statement that describes a project in computational pragmatics in
the context of the applicant’s broader research interests
- Cover letter with a list of undergraduate and graduate courses the applicant
is prepared to teach
- CV
- Writing sample relevant to the proposed project
- Three letters of recommendation (to be sent directly from the recommenders
to Professor de Marneffe)

Applications (minus the letters of recommendation) should be sent as a single
PDF file to Marie-Catherine de Marneffe (email below) with the subject “ACLS
Postdoc”. The application deadline is March 21, 2016.
