Spring Training in Experimental Psycholinguistics (STEP)/Canada

Focus: The Centre for Comparative Psycholinguistics (CCP, University of Alberta Department of Linguistics) organizes a week long Spring Training Workshop in current issues and methods in psycholinguistics. The Spring School is directed at graduate and advanced undergraduate students and anyone else interested in learning how to turn their research ideas into concrete steps towards experimental designs, data collection and analysis using advanced experimental and statistical methods.
Minimum Education Level: Undergraduate


Description:
Our theme for STEP this year is The Psycholinguistics of Learning and features
several new instructors:

A short overview and introduction to statistics and R (Vincent Porretta,
University of Alberta)

Exploring the visual world eye-tracking paradigm: ( Jacolien Van Rij,
University of Tübingen; Vincent Porretta & Juhani Järvikivi, University of
Alberta):
-Introduction and data collection
-Data preprocessing and visualization
-Analyzing the time course of eye-tracking data

Conducting research with bilingual children: Topics and methods (Johanne
Paradis, University of Alberta)

Using speech in psycholinguistics: From speech synthesis to spoken word
recognition (Benjamin V. Tucker, University of Alberta)

Methods in phonological acquisition analysis (Anne-Michelle Tessier & Kayla
Day, University of Alberta)

Implicit grammar: A discriminative perspective on language and language
processing (R. Harald Baayen, University of Tübingen)

Simple approaches to building and combining  new behavioural psycholinguistic
techniques (Gary Libben, Brock University) 

This year we will also be offering a optional day-long intensive course on
Using Generalized Additive Mixed Modeling (GAMMs) for Analyzing Eye-tracking
Data taught by Jacolien Van Rij on Saturday, May 21.

Tuition: 320 CAD

Tuition Explanation: The workshop fee includes attendance, workshop materials, tea/coffee, light
snacks and lunches (5 days).

There is an additional fee of $20 for attending the day-long intensive course
on GAMMs. This fee includes tea/coffee, light snacks and lunch on Saturday,
May 21. 

There is a late fee of $30 for attendees who register after the deadline of
April 25, 2016.

You will find the registration form on the STEP page of the CCP website. You
will need to both submit a registration form AND complete the payment to be
considered registered in the workshop. 

You will be asked to indicate which courses you would like to take on the
registration form. Please check the course schedule on the webpage to help you
make your decision. 

Registrations submitted after the registration deadline of April 25, 2016 will
be charged a $30 (CAD) late fee. Registration will close on May 9, 2016.
