Date: 14-Jul-2016 - 15-Jul-2016
Location: Sheffield, United Kingdom
Contact Person: Jane Hodson
Meeting Email: j.hodson at sheffield.ac.uk

Linguistic Field(s): Ling & Literature; Sociolinguistics

Call Deadline: 01-Apr-2016

Meeting Description:

This conference will explore the ways in which dialect is represented is
represented in literature and film from a range of disciplinary perspectives.
It includes special panels on Dialect and Film and the Pedagogy of Dialect and
Literature/Film.

Call for Papers:

This conference invites papers that explore the ways in which dialect is
represented from a range of disciplinary perspectives. We welcome papers that
focus on dialect representation in any period, genre or geographical location,
including regional, social and world dialects. We are keen to accept papers
that deal with dialect in languages other than English, but would ask that all
papers be presented in English. Topics that might be addressed include:

-What does it mean to represent a nonstandard variety of language?
-How do readers know that a nonstandard variety is intended?
-What do readers take from such representations?
-How do dialect representations operate in crosscultural or multilingual
contexts?
-To what extent and in what ways are dialect representations of interest to
linguists?
-How are dialect representations to be understood in literary terms?
-Which theoretical frameworks should be adopted when discussing dialect and
literature?

Alongside the open call, we also invite papers for two special panels:

Panel: Dialect and Film
This panel will consider the ways in which different varieties of English are
deployed in film. How does the treatment of language variety in film differ
across time, genre, director and geographical location? What are the
appropriate theories and methodologies to employ when researching this topic?

Panel: Teaching Dialect and Literature/Film
This panel will aim to share good practice in the teaching of Dialect and
Literature/Film at any level. What are the pedagogical challenges of working
with students to analyse language variation in film and literature? What are
the opportunities?

In addition to the open call and two panels, there will also be a special
discussion forum:

Discussion forum: Interrogating the AND in Dialect and Literature or Dialect
and Film.
This panel will ask 'what are the questions?' that need addressing in research
conducted under such titles. All attendees at the conference (whether giving
another paper or not) are invited to speak on this topic for 5-10 minutes. If
you would like to participate, please send in a proposed title by the deadline
(this does not require a full abstract).

Please submit abstracts of 250 words to j.hodson at sheffield.ac.uk by Friday 1
April 2016.
