Description:
In this course you will acquire knowledge about the various aspects of
bilingualism from the psycholinguistic perspective. We will start with a
discussion of what it means to be bilingual for an individual, as well as
society, and a presentation of ways of studying bilingual people in
experimental settings. Next bilingual speech comprehension and production will
be of
a major focus. Furthermore, aspects of bilingual reading, writing, as well as
language acquisition (both simultaneous and successive) will be tackled. The
remaining sessions will be devoted to discussing bilingual memory (lexical
memory, autobiographical memory, inner speech), emotionality (and its impact
on decision making, morality, advertising) and cognitive effects of
bilingualism. The course will also contain a practical aspect. You will be
introduced to and have a chance to design (1) your own online questionnaires
to collect background demographic information, (2) a reaction-time based
experiment (a lexical decision task or a picture naming task). Finally, you
will have a chance to learn about analysing latency data in a hands-on
session.
