Abstract:

This book deals with the basics of experimental methodology in linguistically
oriented second language acquisition research. Linguistically oriented studies
are defined as those whose primary goal is to look at factors influencing the
acquisition of various grammatical (above all morphosyntactic) phenomena;
second language is defined as any language acquired after the mother tongue.
The book adopts a theory-neutral stance and the methods and procedures it
describes are relevant for research conducted in generative, cognitive, or
other theoretical frameworks. The book’s focus is two-fold. First, we cover
general principles involved in designing and conducting an experiment in any
field. Second, we cover problems specific to the study of second language
acquisition, and outline the typical methods in this particular field.
Throughout the book, the reader is provided with pointers to practical
resources and further readings for related topics (e.g., psycholinguistic
methods and statistical analysis). The book is not dedicated to any single
language, so it can be used by all second language researchers, as a course
textbook, or as a manual for designing and conducting experiments.

Chapter 1 defines the basic notions and terms related to the study of second
language acquisition; it introduces linguistic approaches as well as the key
characteristics of experimental research in the area. Chapter 2 is dedicated
to experiment preparation and deals with some basic components of experimental
research – research questions and hypotheses, variables, experimental design,
quality control, and the selection of participants, items and procedures.
Chapter 3 looks more closely at participants in second language acquisition
studies – the methods for determining their proficiency level in the language
studied, the biographical data that should be collected from them, ethical
questions concerning their participation, as well as practical questions
related to participant availability, recruitment and testing. Chapter 4 gives
an overview of frequently used experimental methods in linguistically oriented
second language acquisition research; the methods are grouped into production
and imitation tasks, comprehension and interpretation tasks, and acceptability
judgement tasks, based on the aspect of language knowledge and use that they
test. Lastly, chapter 5 contains some practical notes on time, space and
financial constraints in second language acquisition research. The importance
and the advantages of enhanced methodological training are emphasised in
relation to both second language researchers and teachers.
