Meeting Description: 

This workshop is for students and scholars interested in digital humanities
and empirical quantitative approaches to text in English and Czech/Slavic
languages. The topics will include presentations on the principles of text
analysis using large language corpora; case studies; panel discussions for Q&A
and brain-storming about using quantitative methods; hands-on activities using
texts in English. No prior experience with technology is necessary.

8 April: Keyword Analysis and Topic Modeling

Paul Baker (Lancaster University, UK)  on Keyword Analysis  
Vaclav Cvrcek (Charles University, Czech Republic) on the theory behind
keyword analysis 
Brian  Croxall (Brown University) on Topic Modeling using Ernest Hemingway's
texts 

2.  Panel/group discussions on corpus-driven methods in research and teaching 

3.  Hands-on activities using KWords (a web-based keyword analysis tool)  

9 April, half day:  

1. Case Study Presentations Using Corpora Data: Neil Bermel (Sheffield
University, UK), Lida Cope (East Carolina University), Masako Fidler (Brown
University) 

2. Presentation and hands-on experience: Resources at the Institute of the
Czech National Corpus, Charles University in Prague (Vaclav Cvrcek) 

Organized by the Center for Digital Scholarship at the Brown University
Library, the Sheridan Center for Teaching and Learning, and the Department of
Slavic Studies at Brown University.  Funded in part by the Charles K. Colver
Lectureship and the C. V. Starr Foundation Lectureship (from the Office of the
Dean of the Faculty), the International Association of Teachers of Czech, The
Czech National Corpus Institute at Charles University  in Prague, the Henry
Kucera Lectureship/Department of Slavic Studies, and the Center for Language
Studies, Brown University.
