Meeting Description:

Linguistics beyond language − Language beyond linguistics

Contemporary linguistic research is often done in close collaboration with
other scientific disciplines. Additionally, linguistic research is often
itself multidisciplinary by nature, reaching out to cognitive sciences,
educational sciences, sociology, medicine and technical sciences, to name but
a few. When reaching out to educational sciences and language education,
linguists investigate how and when languages are learnt and taught.
Consequently, research focuses for example on the methods and technologies
used in language teaching, as well as on learning environments and language
learning as a cognitive process. Recently, linguists have also become more and
more interested in the multilingual world we live in. In multilingual
interactions, languages come across other languages, touching and crossing
language boundaries. When exploring these phenomena, linguists study the
encounters of linguistic resources between different languages in language
learning, everyday and institutional interactions, texts, and in translations.
Moreover, new links between linguistics and other disciplines have resulted in
new questions concerning the fundamental nature of language. One new area
concerns the multimodal features of language use. For example, linguists have
become interested in the link between gestures – and the body more generally –
and language. Linguists have also begun to study how multimodality features in
Internet discourse, and especially the influence it has on interaction and
meaning-making taking place online.

The Finnish Conference of Linguistics 2016 charts questions and challenges
that are relevant and important right now for understanding the transforming
society. It also explores the role, relevance and significance of linguistic
research for humans and humanity in the rapidly changing world. The invited
plenarists address the conference theme from their respective viewpoints:

Tommi Jantunen: Kurkotellen kohti kielioppia − Miten syntaksia on venytetty
suomalaisen viittomakielen tutkimuksessa? (Reaching out to grammar: How has
the concept of syntax been stretched in sign linguistic research?)
Kobin Kendrick: The organization of assistance in interaction: From offers and
requests to recruitments
Marja-Liisa Olthuis and Ciprian Gerstenberger: Implementations of language
technology: Learning an endangered language and facilitating translation work.

The conference also includes the traditional panel discussion organized by the
Linguistic Association of Finland. The topic of the panel is the role of
linguistics in Finnish schools.

Notifications of acceptance will be sent by 18 March 2016. The registration
will be open 18 March – 15 April 2016. The registration fee is 120€ (80€ for
doctoral and MA students). The fee includes lunch buffet (Thurs–Fri) and
morning and afternoon coffees (Wed–Fri).

Instructions for registration and payment will be added on the conference
website by 18 March 2016. Information about hotels, evening programme and
other practical information will be updated on the website during spring.
