Description:

The Faculty of Arts is seeking to fill the following full-time (100%) vacancy
in the Department of Linguistics for a Doctoral Grant by the University
Research Fund (BOF) in the area of Spanish Linguistics.

Project title: Insubordination and language variation. A corpus-based
comparative analysis of independent complement clauses in geographical
varieties of Spanish.

This project analyzes the dialectal variation of insubordination, the
phenomenon whereby a formally subordinate or dependent clause is
conventionally used as a main or independent clause (Evans 2007). Adopting an
interactional constructional approach to language, the project is based is
based on a quantitative and qualitative corpus analysis on spoken corpora from
the main dialectal areas of European and American Spanish.

Job description:

- You prepare a doctoral thesis in the field of Spanish Linguistics
- You publish scientific articles related to the research project of the
assignment
- You contribute to teaching and research in the Department of Linguistics (in
the area of Spanish Linguistics)

Profile and requirements:

- You hold a master degree in Language and Literature (specialization in
Spanish) or Linguistics (specialization in Spanish)
- You can submit outstanding academic results
- Students in the final year of their degree can also apply
- Foreign candidates are encouraged to apply
- Your academic qualities comply with the requirements stipulated in the
university’s policy
- You are quality-oriented, conscientious, creative and cooperative
- You have an excellent command of oral and written Spanish (near native) and
English (academic English)
- You have proven knowledge of at least two of the following fields:
Construction Grammar, Interactional Linguistics, Syntax, Pragmatics, Language
variation
- You are familiar with linguistic variation within European and American
Spanish

We offer:

- A doctoral scholarship for a period of two years, with the possibility of
renewal for a further two-year period after positive evaluation
- The start date of scholarship will be October 1st, November 1st or December
1st 2016 or January 1st 2017
- A gross monthly grant ranging from € 2.189,88 - € 2.513,13
- A dynamic and stimulating work environment

Applications may only be submitted online, and should include a copy of your
CV and a cover letter, until the closing date 15 August 2016. Also, give a
brief summary (maximum 500 words) of your master thesis or another relevant
piece of research that you have conducted, stating clearly these points: goal
of the research, theoretical framework, data and methodology, results,
relevance of the results. Include a Spanish and an English version (they do
not need to be exact translations). A pre-selection will be made from amongst
the submitted applications.
 
The remainder of the selection procedure is specific to the position and will
be determined by the selection panel.

The interviews of the candidates, preselected by a selection panel, will take
place from August 22nd until September 16th 2016.
