From: Anne Breitbarth [anne.breitbarth at ugent.be]
Subject: German; Middle Low German; Computational Linguistics; Historical Linguistics; Text/Corpus Linguistics, PhD, Ghent University, Belgium

 Institution/Organization: Ghent University
Department: Linguistics ; Translation & Communication
Web Address: http://www.chlg.ac.uk/

Level: PhD

Duties: Project Work

Specialty Areas: Computational Linguistics; Historical Linguistics; Text/Corpus Linguistics

Required Language(s): German (deu)
                      German, Middle Low (gml)

Description:

The parsed Corpus of Historical Low German (CHLG), funded by the Hercules
Foundation/FWO, is looking for one collaborator on a bursary contract for two
years to help build the Middle Low German part of the corpus. The tasks
include the annotation (POS tagging, syntactic parsing) of the texts, as well
as refining the NLP tools already developed within the project. These include
a specialized POS tagger, a morphological classifier, and a shallow parser.
Ability to work on a deep parser would be a plus. The POS and morphological
annotation is done in CorA, using a derivate of the HiTS tagset (Dipper et al.
2013). The deep parsing, within the format of the Penn Parsed Corpora of
Historical English, is so far done using Annotald
(https://annotald.github.io), but requires to be partly automatized.

The candidate should have
- A Masters degree or equivalent
- Experience in developing NLP tools
- Good command of Python
- Familiarity with Middle Low German or other older West Germanic languages
(e.g. Middle High German, Early New High German, Middle Dutch)
- Familiarity with the construction of corpora (synchronic or historical)
- Interest in doing research on Middle Low German/Corpus Linguistics /
Computational Linguistics: working on publications and grant applications with
the other project team members is expected.

The position:
- Temporary contract for two years, beginning September 2016 or soon
thereafter
- Place of work: Ghent (Belgium)
- Status of Bursary Research Assistant (Dehousse scholarship)

NB: This is an infrastructure grant for two years. The advertised position is
therefore not a grant allowing the candidate to complete a PhD. However, we
encourage engagement in research based on the corpus, and support any
ambitions to continue with a PhD research after the end of the funded period.
Therefore, the position is most suitable for recent graduates who have not
decided yet whether they would like to do a PhD or not, allowing them to gain
relevant experience in a research context along with important practical
skills.
