Description:

One Postdoctoral Research Fellowship and one Doctoral Research Fellowship are
available at the Center for Multilingualism in Society across the Lifespan
(MultiLing) at the Department of Linguistics and Scandinavian Studies,
University of Oslo, starting November 2016, for three years. The fellowships
are funded by the University of Oslo’s investment in developing world-leading
research communities and are part of one of MultiLing’s new research projects,
“Multilingualism and globalization: Perspectives from Norway”.

MultiLing is a Center of Excellence funded by the Research Council of Norway
and opened on June 1, 2013. It aims to generate scientific knowledge on
multilingualism across the lifespan, related to three themes: Individual
multilingual competence, multilingual language practices, and management of
multilingualism in society (for more information, see
http://www.hf.uio.no/multiling/). The above-mentioned research project is part
of MultiLing’s research theme “The management of multilingualism”.

The project seeks to study the role of English and other languages in Norway’s
contemporary multilingual landscape. In order to understand globalization,
migration and changing social and economic conditions, there is a need to
focus not only on English but also on the complexity of interlocking languages
in any context. This project aims to investigate these interactions between
global and local forces. The aim of the project “Multilingualism and
globalization: Perspectives from Norway” is thus to investigate the cultural
politics of English as an international language in the context of the
multilingual situation in a variety of Norwegian contexts.

We seek strongly motivated, competent and internationally oriented candidates,
with high-ranking academic qualifications in the relevant area of research.

For the Doctoral position, the candidate must have an MA degree or equivalent
in Linguistics, Communication, Anthropology, or some other relevant discipline
related to MultiLing’s work (note the requirement of a minimum 2-year MA or
equivalent).

More information about the position can be found at the application URL below.
