Description:

Applications are invited for open-rank positions in the Department of English
by applicants specializing in one or more areas of the discipline of
Linguistics. Since its inception in 2008, the Department of English has
established four undergraduate programmes of study with a concentration on
English-language linguistics, English-language literature as well as
Translation Studies. The Department also has a vibrant postgraduate programme
in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages and is expected to
establish another postgraduate offering in Mass Media Translation. Further,
the Department operates a successful research-based doctoral programme. It has
grown out of the Department of English, Culture and Communication, which from
September 2016 will become the Department of English and the School of Film
and Television Arts. The Department of English welcomes applications from
those who possess:

- A PhD in Linguistics or sub-disciplines such as Applied Linguistics or TESOL
- Experience in designing and delivering undergraduate and postgraduate
students modules in linguistics
- A growing research profile in the field of linguistics or related areas plus
a commensurate record of research impact
- Demonstrated capacity in teaching and research-related administration

In addition, those applicants aiming to be appointed at the Associate
Professor level should be able to clearly demonstrate:

- A PhD in Linguistics or sub-disciplines such as Applied Linguistics or TESOL
- A good record of the supervision of MA or PhD candidates
- Experience in curriculum development or programme management
- A developing or international research profile or record of research funding
- Positive outcomes in teaching and research-related administration

With a faculty of 15 members and a student body of 250, the Department of
English is one of the more established entities in Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool
University. The University is a unique collaborative institution, the first
and currently the only university in China to offer both UK (University of
Liverpool) and Chinese (Ministry of Education) accredited undergraduate
degrees. The University now has over 8,000 students, who from July 2016 will
be spread across two adjoining campuses. The medium of instruction is English.
The University aims to be research-led, and has recently committed significant
investment into research development and the expansion of PhD student numbers
on campus. Academic members of staff enjoy access to a wide range of
electronic databases as well as print resources.

Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University is located in Suzhou Industrial Park. This
location is well-connected via nearby airports to cities such as Hong Kong,
Seoul, Taipei and Tokyo and via high-speed rail to other major cities in
China. Suzhou Industrial Park is only 25 minutes by high-speed rail from
Shanghai. 

The salary range for the position is 19,971 – 30,701 RMB/month (Lecturer), and
31,166 – 42,546 RMB/month (Associate Professor). In addition, members of
academic staff are entitled to accommodation and travel allowances, medical
insurance, and relocation expenses. Overseas staff may receive a tax “holiday”
of up to three years, depending on nationality, residence and personal
circumstances.
