Innsbrucker Winterschool: Potenziale der Angewandten Linguistik. "TOURISMUS UND IDENTITAET. Sprache – Interaktion – Marketing" / Innsbruck Winter School: Potentials of Applied Linguistics. "TOURISM AND IDENTITY. Language – Interaction – Marketing"/Austria

Host Institution: Universität Innsbruck
Coordinating Institution: Universität Innsbruck
Website: https://www.uibk.ac.at/germanistik/pal/cfp_workshop.html

Dates: 10-Nov-2016 - 12-Nov-2016
Location: Obergurgl, Tyrol, Austria

The workshop pursues two goals: On the one hand, we try to stimulate interdisciplinary and international exchange regarding tourism as a scientific topic by inviting renowned linguists, researchers from the social sciences and experts from the tourism industry for presentations and a “fireside chat”. On the other hand, the workshop is also the kick-off event for the newly founded Innsbruck Winter School “Potentials of Applied Linguistics”. The meeting should serve as a platform for networking and discussing methodical challenges, which prompts us to explicitly include early career researchers. Therefore, this call is aimed at pre-docs and early career researchers who currently carry out studies on the questions described above. They get the opportunity to participate in the workshop and to present and discuss their own work.

Tourism is one of the most important commercial sectors in the world. Guests
frequently speak other languages or at least different varieties than their
hosts. Therefore, processes of linguistic accommodation are essential for the
success of any interaction between travellers and their harbourers. Languages
and varieties are also important aspects of constructing one’s identity. On
the one hand, language use facilitates the identification with other
participants in an interaction; on the other hand, it serves to distinguish
oneself from others. In this workshop, we take a closer look at processes of
accommodation and demarcation, negotiations of identity, the role of different
languages and regional varieties from the viewpoint of travellers, hosts,
staff and tourism experts.

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Indiana University and
as such can receive donations through Indiana University Foundation. We
also collect donations via eLinguistics Foundation, a registered 501(c)
Non Profit organization with the federal tax number 45-4211155. Either
way, the donations can be offset against your federal and sometimes your
state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more information visit the
IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.

Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that
they will match any gift you make to a non-profit organization.
Normally this entails your contacting your human resources department
and sending us a form that the Indiana University Foundation fills in
and returns to your employer. This is generally a simple administrative
procedure that doubles the value of your gift to LINGUIST, without
costing you an extra penny. Please take a moment to check if
your company operates such a program.
