Subject: Interactive Demographic Map of Totonacan Languages

We are pleased to announce an online, interactive map of communities where
languages from the Totonacan family (Mexico) are spoken, accompanied by
various population and demographic indicators from the Mexican national
censuses (1990, 2000, 2010). The map is freely available online at
http://www.artsrn.ualberta.ca/totonaco2/?page_id=2459 in both English and
Spanish.

A total of 1,562 communities in the Mexican states of Puebla, Hidalgo, and
Veracruz are represented. The focus of the map is on the linguistic vitality
of the Totonacan languages. Population and demographic indicators are
presented via a customizable interface that allows the user to highlight
individual languages or communities. Several comparative and historical
indicators are included to show the variation in linguistic vitality. Users
can also search the full dataset of the 2010 census for the listed
communities.

The map was created as part of the Upper Necaxa Totonac Project
(http://www.artsrn.ualberta.ca/totonaco2/), funded by the Social Sciences and
Humanities Research Council of Canada.

Additional information or suggestions can be sent to the lead researcher at

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Indiana University and
as such can receive donations through Indiana University Foundation. We
also collect donations via eLinguistics Foundation, a registered 501(c)
Non Profit organization with the federal tax number 45-4211155. Either
way, the donations can be offset against your federal and sometimes your
state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more information visit the
IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.

Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that
they will match any gift you make to a non-profit organization.
Normally this entails your contacting your human resources department
and sending us a form that the Indiana University Foundation fills in
and returns to your employer. This is generally a simple administrative
procedure that doubles the value of your gift to LINGUIST, without
costing you an extra penny. Please take a moment to check if
your company operates such a program.

Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
