Meeting Description:

The Center for Languages and Intercultural Communication (CLIC) at Rice
University is pleased to announce the 2017 CLIC Conference on Study Abroad:
Understanding the Study Abroad Experience.

The goal of this conference is to bring together researchers and teachers who
have conducted research on various aspects of the study abroad experience,
with a special focus on students’ interactions outside the classroom.

Plenary speakers:

Celeste Kinginger, Pennsylvania State University
Nicole Tracy-Ventura, University of South Florida

Particular topics of interest include, but are not limited to: 
- Extracurricular activities for students abroad: volunteering, language
partners, home stays, service-learning, etc.
- Student life abroad outside the classroom: social interactions, online
interactions, service encounters, use of technology, etc.
- Intercultural competence
- Identity and relationships abroad
- Measuring gains during and after study abroad with a focus on: interactional
competence; pragmatics; etc.


Call for Papers: 

The Center for Languages and Intercultural Communication (CLIC) at Rice
University is pleased to invite proposals for the 2017 CLIC Conference on
Study Abroad: Understanding the Study Abroad Experience.

Goals: 
The goal of this conference is to bring together researchers and teachers who
have conducted research on various aspects of the study abroad experience,
with a special focus on students’ interactions outside the classroom.

Topics: 
We welcome proposals from all areas of applied linguistics, including (but not
limited to): second language acquisition, conversation analysis, discourse
analysis, ethnography, psycholinguistics, language and cognition, assessment,
etc.; as well as projects involving qualitative and quantitative approaches;
short-term and longitudinal research; pedagogy; etc.

Submission: 
Proposals should be submitted by email to clic-conferences at rice.edu no later
than September 1, 2016. All proposals should include a title and an abstract
(max. 500 words) and a list of the references cited if applicable. Please
include your name, affiliation, and contact information in the body of the
email. Please also indicate whether you would prefer to present a paper or a
poster (and please note that you may be asked to present either).
