Meeting Description:

Differential object marking (DOM) has received considerable attention in the
literature (Comrie 1979, Bossong 1985, 1998, Croft 1998, Lazard 1994, 2011,
Dalrymple & Nikolaeva 2011, Iemmolo 2011). Research over the past twenty years
has allowed us to grasp the key parameters at work (Hopper & Thompson 1980,
Laca 2002, 2006, Aissen 2003, Leonetti 2003, 2007, Næss 2004, von Heusinger &
Kaiser 2005, de Hoop & de Swart 2007). This research has also contributed to a
more fine-grained presentation of the phenomenon in a growing number of
languages, in synchrony and, for some cases, in diachrony. 

In this workshop, we are interested in how DOM is acquired and in how
acquisition data can help us evaluate the explanatory power of available
theoretical analyses.
In the past ten years, we could see a number of studies on DOM in L2 learning
and heritage speakers settings (Guijarro-Fuentes 2011, 2012; Guijarro-Fuentes
& Marinis 2007, 2009; Montrul 2014, 2011, 2014; Montrul & Bowles 2008, 2009;
Bohnacker & Mohammadi 2012; Ciovârnache & Avram 2013; Montrul & Sánchez-Walker
2013; Avram et al. 2014; Montrul et al. 2015), as well as on DOM in early
bilingualism (Ticio 2015). More recently, the L1 acquisition of DOM has also
been investigated (see, e.g. Rodríguez-Mondoñedo 2008 and the 2015 special
theme issue of Revue Roumaine de Linguistique, n° 4). 

However, these studies investigated the acquisition and the learning of DOM in
a limited number of languages or language pairs (mostly Spanish and a few
other Romance and / or European languages). We would like to learn more about
the acquisition of DOM in other (typologically different) laguages of the
world, in order to have a better understanding of this phenomenon from a
cross-linguistic perspective. 

At the same time, we would like to know more about the following specific
aspects of DOM acquisiton (this list is by no means exhaustive):  
- the acquisition of DOM in L3 and in more L1 settings
- the role of language contact in the acquisition of DOM 
- semantic universals in the acquisition and the learning of DOM
- the link between the acquisition of DOM and of clitic doubling
- the acquisition of object scrambling and of DOM
- child input divergent patterns in L1 and L2 and language change

Call for Papers: 

We invite papers dealing with any aspect of  the acquisition and the learning
of DOM exemplifying the previous scenarios (or suggesting new ones). 

Anonymous abstracts not exceeding 2 pages (including references and examples)
should be sent as PDF attachments to the organizer,
alexandru.mardale at inalco.fr, by 1 September 2016. Please specify in your
message the following : author name(s), presentation title, institutional
affiliation.

Presentations will be allotted 30 minute slots including 10 minutes for
discussion.

The publication of a selection of the papers as a book or a special issue of
an international journal is foreseen.
