Call Deadline: 15-Jul-2016

Meeting Description:

The American Name Society is the world's oldest scholarly societies devoted to
the study of names and naming. In January 2017, we will be holding our annual
conference in conjunction with the Linguistic Society of America in Austin,
Texas. Abstracts are warmly welcomed on any area of onomastic research [e.g.
people's names (anthroponyms); animal names (zoonyms); place names; names of
bodies of water (hodonyms), names of literary figures (characteronyms) etc.]
from any language, from anywhere on the planet, past, present, or future.

Call for Papers:

The ANS is inviting abstract submissions for a special panel on “Onomastics
Beyond Academia” for the 2017 annual conference to be held in conjunction with
the Linguistic Society of America. The purpose of the panel is to highlight
professional applications of onomastics outside of the university setting.

All professional names enthusiasts are invited to submit an abstract for a
20-minute presentation. Abstracts proposals should answer one or more of the
following questions:

- How did your training in onomastics help your professional life, outside of
academia (e.g. finding a job or building your own business)?

- How do you work with onomastic data in your profession?

- What are some of the most interesting challenges which you (and your
colleagues) face in using names data?

- What new markets are opening for names enthusiasts?

- What practical recommendations would you give to other names enthusiasts who
are interested in working outside of academia?

To submit a proposal, simply send a 250-word abstract proposal and a 100-word
professional biography to Laurel Sutton laurel at catchwordbranding.com by the 15
of July 2016. For organizational purposes, please be sure to include the
phrase “ANS 2017: Panel” in the subject line of your email.

All proposals will be subjected to blind review. Official notification of
proposal acceptances will be sent on or before September 30, 2015. All authors
whose papers have been accepted must be current members of the ANS and need to
register with both the ANS and the Linguistic Society of America. Please feel
free to contact Laurel Sutton should you have any questions or concerns.

We look forward to receiving your submission!

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Indiana University and
as such can receive donations through Indiana University Foundation. We
also collect donations via eLinguistics Foundation, a registered 501(c)
Non Profit organization with the federal tax number 45-4211155. Either
way, the donations can be offset against your federal and sometimes your
state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more information visit the
IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.

Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that
they will match any gift you make to a non-profit organization.
Normally this entails your contacting your human resources department
and sending us a form that the Indiana University Foundation fills in
and returns to your employer. This is generally a simple administrative
procedure that doubles the value of your gift to LINGUIST, without
costing you an extra penny. Please take a moment to check if
your company operates such a program.

Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
