Subject: Call for Proposals: English in the Caribbean and Latin American Basin

English in the Caribbean and Latin American Basin to Speakers of Other
Languages

Global trends of widening access and involvement of non–metropolitan providers
in English language education have created strong advocacy for postmodern
approaches to the teaching and learning of English as a Foreign and Second
language in global classrooms since the 1990s. More recently, growing
South–South relations between the Caribbean Basin and Latin America continue
to signal a major expansion of programs in English to Speakers of Other
Languages, in the Outer and Expanding Circles.

In particular, the growth and continuity of English Language programmes, in
Dominica, St Vincent, Barbados and Trinidad are indicators of a deepening
relationship among the region’s learners, teachers, and trainers, and the
further potential for developing similar niche markets within the region. An
increasing trend of regional openness is also evident in MOU collaborations
among regional stakeholders, who have identified interests in teacher
training, research, and exchanges, in relation to regional ESOL programmes.
Apart from this, the JET (Japanese English Teaching Programme) has been
extended into the Anglophone Caribbean over the last decade.

Much knowledge and research are also shared through conferences in the Latin
American and Caribbean Basin through its English Language Teachers
Associations. However, while the situation of Caribbean speakers learning
English as a second variety abroad has received ample focus (Elder et al.
2004; Nero 2006; 2000; 1996 and Winer 2006), the contribution of the
Caribbean–Latin American region to the field of English to Speakers of Other
Languages is less known to the wider world.

The current volumes bring together scholars, advanced graduate students,
teacher trainers and practitioners who can make a meaningful contribution to
the “unheard perspective” of teaching and learning English as a Second and
Foreign language from a Caribbean–Latin American cultural viewpoint. Towards
the publishing of ground breaking texts in this burgeoning field, we invite
chapter proposals which will offer insight on the prospects of ESOL, from
within these lesser known cultural contexts. This unifying work, with a
post–modern stance, relates regional and global changes in society to
reflections by the region’s educators and learners about the purposes,
strategies, contradictions and complexities of teaching and learning English
in ESOL contexts. Potential themes include but are not limited to:

Teaching and Learning English and the Geopolitics of the Region
Teaching English Home and Abroad
Emerging Purposes and Methodologies for ESOL
Learners Voices and Access
Applied Discourse Approaches to ESOL
Regional Englishes
Indigenous Cultures and Teaching and Learning English
Intercultural Communication and EFL/ESL
Immersion and Professional Development for Special Groups
Multilingual and Bilingual Contexts
Language–Vacation Education Programmes
Violence, Displacement and English Language Teaching and Learning
Prospects for the Future.

Proposals should be sent to Dr. Renée Figuera at rmrrfiguera at gmail.com and
Prof. Valerie Youssef at valyoussef at gmail.com, simultaneously. We request
abstracts of 600 words by July 31 2016, and anticipate final publication by
July 2018.
