teach TESOL methodology, from both a theoretical and a practical perspective,
is essential; a research specialism that complements or strengthens existing

The appointee’s primary duties will include the conduct of high-quality
research in their chosen specialism and a significant contribution to the
teaching and administration of the MA in Applied Linguistics for TESOL;
additional duties will include developing, convening and teaching modules
suitable for the MA in Linguistics or the BA in English Language and
Linguistics as appropriate.

The principal duties and responsibilities of the successful candidate will be
as follows:

Research

- Engage in research and produce published research outputs of the highest
quality in the fields of TESOL, applied linguistics or L2 acquisition.
- Develop research plans in line with the School’s strategy and expectations.
- Seek external research funding and develop a record of success in attracting
such funding.
 - Contribute to and enhance the research activities and culture of the
Department of English Language and Linguistics, the School of European Culture
and Languages, and the University.
- Participate fully in the research culture within the School, and contribute
actively to its development.
- Attract and supervise postgraduate students to successful completion.
- Enhance the reputation and standing of the Department of English Language
and Linguistics for the quality of its research, and the influence of that
research on the wider community through enterprise and knowledge transfer.

Teaching

- Contribute substantially to the teaching of the MA in Applied Linguistics
for TESOL.
- Design, teach and convene modules in his/her areas of expertise.
- Contribute to teaching of other modules at undergraduate level as required
by the Head of Department, and undertake such other teaching or
teaching-related activities that are required (for example, providing academic
advice and support to students).
- Contribute to first-marking and moderation of examination scripts in the
summer term, and attend the meeting of the relevant examination board.
- Be committed to the provision of equal opportunities and to the delivery of
English Language and Linguistics modules to a diverse body of students.
- Undertake such other duties, commensurate with the grading of the post, that
may be assigned by the Head of School or their nominee.

Administration

- Undertake module and programme administration and examining, particularly
for the MA in Applied Linguistics for TESOL.
- Attend departmental and School meetings as appropriate.
- Participate in recruitment activities for English Language and Linguistics
programmes.
- Assist in meeting the requirements for the monitoring of teaching and
learning, as prescribed by the University and external bodies.
- Help with other tasks relating to the running of the subject as they arise.
- Undertake other administrative tasks as directed by the Head of School or
their nominee.
