Meeting Description:

Some say that machine translation is just another translation tool. Others
argue that it represents a paradigm shift in the profession. Neither view,
however, is expressed without reservations. Those who downplay machine
translation and consider it just another technology tool to help with
translation question the quality of machine translation output, arguing that
it rarely fulfils expectations. Meanwhile, those who see machine translation
as a paradigm shift are reluctant to use it, for fear that it might replace
human translators as we know them today. Both groups test the technology,
whether publicly or in private, some using free systems, others commercial.
But machine translation is moving forward, slowly but surely, and sooner or
later human translators and machine translators will need to learn to get
along. We believe human translators must become ready to work with machine
translation and need to acquire post-editing skills. Those with advanced
knowledge could even take charge of a company's machine translation system.

The Tradumàtica research group at the Department of Translation, Interpreting
and East Asian Studies at the Autonomous University of Barcelona is organizing
the 2nd International T3L Conference (Tradumatics, Translation Technologies &
Localisation) in conjunction with the 9th International Congress on
Translation, with the theme ''Translators and Machine Translation''.

Opening conferences by Mikel Forcada (University of Alacant) and Olga Blasco
(The Rosetta Foundation).


Call for Papers:

We welcome proposals from both academia and business in order to establish
subsequent synergies between the two that could lead to cooperation on
research projects with a real social and economic impact on the translation
industry, machine translation and post-editing. We welcome proposals on the
following topics, among others:

-Tools and resources for machine translation and post-editing
-The cognitive processes of machine-translation post-editors
-Training in machine translation and post-editing
-Quality systems in machine translation and post-editing
-In-house machine translation and post-editing.

The congress languages will be Catalan, Spanish and English.

Types of sessions:

- Presentations: 20 minutes.
- Round-table discussions: Longer presentations with various speakers
directing the advanced topics and providing different viewpoints.

Workshops: Two-hour workshops that provide expert-level training, guided
practice in a particular discipline, or topics related to machine translation
and post-editing.
