Description:

NTID is currently accepting applications for a 12-month, three-year Research
Assistant Professor position, which is non-tenure track and renewable annually
for up to three years.  The successful candidate will have an appointment in
the Department of American Sign Language and Interpreter Education and will
report to the Director of the NTID Center on Cognition and Language.

The Research Assistant Professor will be responsible for leading NTID’s
efforts in increasing the number of American Sign Language (ASL) proficiency
measures to be used to evaluate faculty and staff sign language skills. This
includes developing new measures, testing the psychometric properties of the
measures, developing a normative database, and assisting with the
implementation of these tests to be used for tenure and promotion purposes.

Job Responsibilities:

This position leads and supports the implementation of new sign language
proficiency assessment measures at NTID. Specifics of yearly responsibilities,
goals, and objectives will be formalized through annual plans of work between
the Research Assistant Professor and the Director of the NTID Center on
Cognition and Language, in consultation with the NTID Office of the Associate
Dean of Research and NTID Office of the President.

Key Activities:

Evaluating the psychometrics of existing ASL measures for the appropriateness
and feasibility for use at NTID.  Developing a new ASL Sentence Repetition
Test appropriate for hearing individuals who learn ASL as a second language. 
Developing a diagnostic test that successfully demonstrates the linguistics
areas of ASL that faculty and staff have mastered and the areas that need
improvement.

Professional and Scholarly Activities:

-  Participate in professional development opportunities to further develop
skills in research methods, statistics, data analysis, grant writing, and
dissemination
-  Participate in local, regional, and/or national professional organization
meetings as appropriate
-  Collaborate with national and international scientists who specialize in
sign language assessment
-  Conduct scholarly activities in research, and publish in scholarly
journals.
-  Seek grants and contracts through NIH, NSF, IES and the like, as principal
investigator
-  Provide mentoring to deaf and hard of hearing students pursuing research
careers including those in the Rochester Bridges to the Doctorate program and
the Rochester Post-Doctoral Partnership program.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

-  PhD or EdD in Linguistics, Psychology, Education, or related fields
-  Experience in sign language research
-  Proficiency in American Sign Language is required. Ability to communicate
effectively with wide range of Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals.
