Subject: M.A. in Teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language and TESOL

This is a 2-year program (1 year in Madrid and 1 year in New York) that leads
to Dual Certification as a teacher of Spanish and TESOL.

The MA in Teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language and TESOL combines one year
of study in Madrid with one year of study in New York City and includes a
generous financial aid package. Graduates are eligible for dual initial
certification as a teacher of Spanish for grades 7-12 and as a teacher of
English as a second language for grades K-12.

Students spend their first year taking classes full time at NYU Madrid, where
they are immersed in language and culture. They work closely with Spanish
pedagogues on language acquisition and pedagogy, observe an array of Spanish
as a foreign language classes at NYU Madrid, and participate in cultural
activities and excursions around the city.

The second year takes place at NYU’s Greenwich Village campus in the historic
heart of New York City. Coursework covers contemporary theory and practice of
teaching second/foreign languages, and methods and techniques of language
teaching. Through closely mentored student teaching in New York City public
schools – one semester of teaching Spanish and one semester of TESOL -
students gain essential experience and hone their pedagogical skills.

The program combines the expertise and resources of two premier departments at
NYU, the Department of Spanish and Portuguese Languages and Literatures and
their NYU Madrid program in the Graduate School of Arts and Science and the
Department of Teaching and Learning in Steinhardt’s School of Culture,
Education, and Human Development.

All students enrolled in this program receive a 30% tuition reduction. They
may also be eligible for a federal TEACH grant, which provides $4,000 a year
for those willing to teach in low-income areas.

The application deadline for fall admission is February 1. For more
