Meeting Description:

The Symposium on American Indian Languages (SAIL) is dedicated to discussion
of the documentation, conservation and revitalization of the native languages
of the Americas. SAIL also provides a forum for the exchange of scholarly
research on descriptive and/or theoretical linguistics focusing on American
Indian languages.

Building on RIT's rich history of educational outreach to Native American
communities, SAIL welcomes the active participation of indigenous communities,
native language speakers, and those interested in revitalization and
preservation of their heritage languages and cultures.


Call for Papers:

Abstracts are invited for papers on any aspect of American Indian languages.

Special Session: Language Revitalization Strategies and Pedagogy

The special session will be devoted to papers focusing on language
revitalization, maintenance strategies and pedagogy.

Parasession: Documentation, Description & Theory

The parasession welcomes papers on language documentation (especially those
that make use of digital technologies), and descriptive and/or theoretical
work that draw their data from fieldwork.

Poster Session: We welcome research on any topic covering American Indian
languages (e.g., language documentation, description & theory, historical
linguistics, sociolinguistics, fieldwork, language revitalization, teaching
pedagogy, language policy, community-based programs, use of digital
technologies for language for language revitalization). 

Submission Process:

Abstracts should be up to 500 words or less (excluding examples and/or
references). 

Abstracts should include the following: 

(a) Title of paper
(b) Name of author(s) and Institutional/Tribal affiliation (if any)
(c) Author status (undergraduate/graduate student, post-doc, faculty, and/or
member of Native American community)
(d) Session (special session / parassession / poster session)*

* Oral presentations will be 20 minutes, followed by 10 minutes for
discussion. Special Session and Parassession are limited to 30 minutes. The
Poster Session will run for 75 minute. It provides an opportunity for more
open-ended, two-way communication with the audience. Undergraduate students
are invited to submit an abstract for this session.

Please submit your abstract in PDF format by email to sail at rit.edu (with the
subject: “Abstract - SAIL2017”)

Submission Deadline: Sunday, January 22, 2017.
(Authors will be notified of acceptance by February 15, 2017).

Note: Funds may be available to provide limited support for the direct
expenses (lodging and registration fee) of students and members of Native
American communities whose papers are selected for presentation.  Those
seeking financial support should make a request at the time of submission of
the abstract.
