Description:

The Department of Second Language Studies at the University of Hawai'i at
Manoa invites applications for its Ph.D. program in Second Language Studies. A
limited number of graduate assistantships are available to support top
applicants for four years of study, including a tuition waiver and stipend.

The goal of the doctoral program in SLS is to promote significant
doctoral-level research into the analysis, learning, use and pedagogy of
additional languages. The faculty members research how second languages are
used in multilingual contexts, how additional languages are learned, how they
should be taught, and what psychological and sociological factors influence
their acquisition. Knowledge in this field has a significant impact on such
matters as language policies and practices in homes, workplaces, and
governments, proficiency assessment, program organization, teaching
methodologies, legal issues concerning language, and our understanding of the
nature of language.

The ideal candidate will:

- Hold an MA in applied linguistics, TESOL, linguistics, a foreign language,
cognitive science or a related field and have experience designing, carrying
out, and writing up empirical research studies
- Have a research interest that aligns with the faculty
- Demonstrate strong writing and analytical abilities
