Description:

The University of Southampton is pleased to offer PhD studentships in
linguistics for the 2017/18 academic year through the new ESRC-funded South
Coast Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP). An exciting new collaboration
between the Universities of Southampton, Brighton and Portsmouth, the South
Coast DTP aims to deliver the latest developments in training in research
methods and skills to produce highly qualified and rounded social scientists,
equipped to meet contemporary economic and social challenges. Funding for both
Masters plus PhD (1+3) and standalone PhD (+3) is available. The Department of
Modern Languages has particular strengths in second (L2) and additional
language acquisition, classroom-based L2 instruction, theoretical syntax,
language attrition, variationist sociolinguistics, bilingual education,
teacher development, global Englishes and more.

The South Coast DTP will be awarding 36 studentships per year across its three
partner institutions. The first intake of funded students will be in the
2017/18 Academic Year. In addition to covering the cost of all programme fees,
those in receipt of a South Coast DTP studentship award will also receive an
annual maintenance grant of £14,482 (2017/18 RCUK rate). South Coast DTP PhD
students will also have access to additional funds for carrying out fieldwork,
purchasing essential equipment and attending relevant conferences. Further
