The Department of Linguistics at the University of Chicago is pleased to
invite applications for a 1-year Postdoctoral Position with possible extension
as a part of an NSF project on "Models of ASL handshape recognition” (PIs:
Diane Brentari, Jason Riggle, Karen Livescu, Gregory Shakhnarovich). The goal
of the work is to advance automatic recognition and analysis of American Sign
Language (ASL). The work includes both development of core
learning/vision/language methods and their application to the full range of
human ASL first- and second-language learners. 

The successful candidate will have completed a PhD in linguistics, psychology,
or language processing, and possess strong skills in programming, experimental
design. 

Experience with sign language research, motion capture, phonetics, or
phonology are also desirable, but not necessary. Applicants must have PhD in
hand prior to the start date of the position. The post-doc will also have
opportunities to collaborate with the faculty in the Linguistics Department,
the Toyota Technological Institute of Chicago, and the Center for Gesture,
Sign and Language, and should be able to interact with colleagues in a broad
range of disciplines. Advising and teaching opportunities are likely to be
available if desired, but this is not a requirement of the position.

The start date is flexible. Compensation includes a competitive salary and
benefits plan. There are no citizenship requirements for the post-doc. The
