Subject: Computational Linguistics; Pragmatics: PhD, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Germany

 Institution/Organization: Ruhr-Universität Bochum
Department: Department of Linguistics

Level: PhD

Duties: Research

Specialty Areas: Computational Linguistics; Pragmatics

Description:

The Department of Linguistics at Ruhr-University Bochum invites applications
for a PhD position for the project "Bayesian Approaches to Preference-based
Answer Generation in Dialogue" (BAPAGiD; Principal Investigators: Anton Benz,
ZAS Berlin, and Ralf Klabunde, Ruhr-University Bochum). The project is funded
by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). The period of employment will be
for 24 months, starting in January 2017.

The key innovative aspect of this project is the application of game theoretic
methods to the generation of pragmatically optimal answers in a dialogue
system. It concentrates on the use of numerical expressions, gradable
adjectives and relevance conditionals ("biscuit conditionals") in a sales
scenario. Each of these linguistic means trigger implicatures that show a
sensitivity to interlocutors' (possibly opposing) preferences. These
implicatures consist of soft expectations that call for a Bayesian
probabilistic approach to modeling.

For more information about the project and the vacant PhD position, contact
Ralf Klabunde (klabunde at linguistics.rub.de).

Requirements:

We seek candidates with a background in computational linguistics and/or
experimental pragmaticAPPLICATIONSs, or related disciplines.

The successful candidate has a Master’s degree in one of the aforementioned
areas, solid programming skills, knowledge of Gricean pragmatics, and a strong
interest in doing research. Basic knowledge of German is an advantage.

Applications:

Applications should include:
- A cover letter (maximum two pages),
- Curriculum Vitae,
- Copy of the university marks (grade list),

Applications should be sent before October 31, 2016.

Application Deadline: 31-Oct-2016
