Linguistic Field(s): Anthropological Linguistics; Sociolinguistics

Call Deadline: 09-Dec-2016

Meeting Description:

The aim of the Language, Mobility and Belonging conference is to bring
together leading scholars and graduate students in linguistic anthropology and
related fields in order to discuss the role of language in the
conceptualisation and regulation of belonging in contexts of migration and
global movement.

At the conference we are interested in addressing such questions as:

- How are national and transnational forms of belonging constructed through
legal language? And to what extent can the multiplicity of voices be secured
in state-sponsored language policy?
- How do the linguistic practices of different groups challenge existing
categories of belonging and how do they participate in the creation of new
socio-cultural formations?
- How do forms of ‘citizenship education’ and ‘naturalisation’ language
policies further or impede the development of polities within and across
borders?
- How do migration and increased global movement affect existing language
ideologies and norms? And how do these call into question existing structures
of socioeconomic mobility?

Organising Committee:

Kinga Kozminska
Leonie Schulte
Dr Nancy Hawker
Rosemary Hall

Call for Papers:

What is the role played by language in the conceptualisation and regulation of
belonging in contexts of migration and global movement? Following the 2016
Language, Indexicality and Belonging Conference, the 2017 conference seeks to
continue to bring together leading scholars and graduate students in
linguistic anthropology and related fields in order to discuss the linguistic
aspects of social and spatial mobility in the contemporary world.

We invite 20-minute-long papers contributing to the debates surrounding
language policy and legal language, immigrant integration and ‘naturalization’
policies relating to language, and the relationships between forms of
citizenship, socioeconomic mobility and belonging, language ideology and
linguistic practice. We welcome abstract submissions from researchers in the
field of linguistic anthropology, sociolinguistics and related fields.

Preference will be given to papers based on fieldwork conducted in the last
three years. The papers given at the conference will be published in a
journal, subject to academic review.

Submissions of 500-word abstracts with keywords, and short bios in a separate
file, should be sent to lmb.conference2017 at gmail.com.

Abstracts will undergo blind review, so please make sure that your submission
is properly anonymised. The deadline for submissions is December 9, 2016.
Accepted speakers will be notified on January 16, 2017.
