Description:

The University of Oklahoma's Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History and
the Department of Native American Studies seek an Assistant/Associate Curator
of Native American Languages and an Assistant/Associate Professor of Native
American Studies for a tenure/tenure track position. 
 
Salary: Negotiable (9-month joint appointment). Tenure will be in the
Department of Native American Studies. 
 
Beginning date: August 16, 2017 
 
Description of position: We seek a scholar holding a Ph.D. in linguistic
anthropology or linguistics with a research specialization in Native American
languages. We are especially interested in candidates who demonstrate a
willingness to collaborate with Tribal Nations and Native communities in
Oklahoma, including research and community participation in museum exhibits
and programs. The holder of this position will develop language documentation
and maintenance projects with Oklahoma's Native communities and must possess a
willingness to seek external funding for outreach and research, as well as
maintaining the current language collection in the museum. Preference will be
given to scholars working on combating language endangerment, the development
of language maintenance strategies, as well as those with experience in
fieldwork-based descriptive linguistics. 
 
The successful candidate will also contribute to the mission and goals of the
Native American Studies Department. The teaching load for this position is 1/1
(one course each semester), and will include introductory courses to support
general education along with more specialized upper division courses for
undergraduate majors, as well as graduate seminars. The vibrant and growing
Native American Studies Department offers an undergraduate minor, B.A., and
M.A. as well as a dual MA/JD degree program with the College of Law.  
 
Candidates applying at the Associate level should have a record of
demonstrated excellence in teaching, research and service, including a record
of success in securing external funding. 
 
Responsibilities: In the role of curator, the successful candidate will be
expected to:

- utilize traditional and digital archival techniques to expand and maintain a
public collection of American Indian language data on more than 160 indigenous
languages
 
- work to expand and preserve the collections and develop long-range plans for
collection use and dissemination

- develop and contribute to museum-related exhibit, education, and outreach
activities.
