Synopsis:

Research in pragmatics evolved from its beginnings presenting different
theoretical focuses, making interfaces with cognition, communication and
formal grammar and thus making it very difficult to define. Kasper (1996)
defines interlanguage pragmatics as the ''study of the pragmatic knowledge in
second language acquisition.'' O'Keeffe, Clancy and Adolphs (2011) describe
pragmatics as the study of interpretation of intended meaning in context.
Kasper and Rose (2012) point out that the interpretation of meaning in the
second language environment will benefit from contributions of pragmatics,
especially in the area of pragmatic development in L2 acquisition contexts.
This edition aims to showcase the breadth of research being carried out on
topics related to the acquisition of pragmatic competence in additional
language contexts from a range of perspectives, such as theoretical,
historical, corpus-based approaches and experimental methodologies, among
others.
