Description:

Assistant Professor, Indigenous Language Sustainability
Faculty of Arts, Department of Linguistics

The Department of Linguistics at the University of Alberta invites
applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Indigenous Language
Sustainability (ILS). This full time appointment is effective July 1, 2017.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D in Linguistics and have experience with fieldwork
and language documentation in endangered language communities or ethnography
of Indigenous languages, preferably in the languages of the Americas.
Applicants must demonstrate a track-record of peer-reviewed scholarly
publications and relevant teaching. Experience with digital language data
management and archiving is preferred, as is demonstrated success in securing
external funding for research and other activities related to ILS. The
successful candidate’s research could include, but is not limited to,
Indigenous/endangered language documentation (dictionaries, grammars and text
corpora), the sociocultural dynamics of language revitalization and
development of technologies in support of endangered language sustainability.

Successful candidates will be expected to develop an innovative and robust
externally-funded research program and other activities relating to ILS,
regularly engage in relevant domestic and international research networks,
supervise and mentor graduate students, and provide service to the Department,
the Faculty, the University, as well as to professional and external
communities. The successful candidate is expected to offer linguistics
courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels in general linguistics and
ILS.

The Department of Linguistics is home to the Canadian Indigenous Languages and
Literacy Development Institute (CILLDI), administered through the Department
and sponsored by the Faculties of Arts, Education and Native Studies. CILLDI
hosts an annual Summer School which provides basic training in linguistics,
native languages, second language teaching and other aspects of professional
enhancement related to ILS. The Department of Linguistics also seeks to
establish a new CIELS (Centre for Indigenous/Endangered Language
Sustainability) program to document and sustain Indigenous and endangered
languages through funding, research, publication, archiving, other
dissemination and community service as well as education efforts. The
successful applicant will have opportunities to participate in both CILLDI and
CIELS, as well as to work toward establishing new ILS certificate and degree
programs.

Qualified applicants from endangered language communities are strongly
encouraged to apply.
