Description:

The Department of Portuguese of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities invites
applications for the position of Full/ Associate Professor of Portuguese.

The Department of Portuguese is an established and lively scholarly community
that includes speakers of European, Brazilian and other varieties of
Portuguese. The Department offers an undergraduate degree in Portuguese
Studies concentrating on Portuguese as a Foreign Language with selected
courses in interpretation and translation, foreign language pedagogy, culture,
literature and history of the Portuguese-speaking countries. At the
undergraduate level, the Department also offers Portuguese language courses
within the Faculty of Law and offers elective courses in Portuguese as a
foreign language to students from all faculties at the University. At the
postgraduate level, the Department offers two MA programmes (an MA in
Portuguese Language and Culture and an MA in Translation Studies) and two PhD
areas of research: (i) Portuguese Linguistics and (ii) Portuguese Literary
Studies.

Qualifications

Applicants must hold a PhD in Portuguese Studies or a related area. Applicants
should be bilingual in Chinese and Portuguese, have experience of 10 -15 years
of teaching Portuguese to Chinese students at the tertiary education level,
and have coordination and management experience. Applicants should possess the
ability to plan, organize and establish a Chinese-Portuguese Language Teaching
and Training Centre. The successful candidate will be considered for
appointment as Director of the prospective Chinese-Portuguese Language
Teaching and Training Centre. A good command of English is also preferred.
Applicants with administrative experience are especially welcome. Applicants
with better qualifications may be considered for higher rank.  

The selected candidate is expected to assume duty in August 2017.

Position and Remuneration

Remuneration and appointment rank offered will be competitive and commensurate
with the successful applicants’ academic qualification, current position and
professional experience. The current local maximum income tax rate is 12% but
is effectively around 5% - 7% after various discretionary exemptions.
