I am reading The Relation of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics (Tomic & Shuy
1987) https://goo.gl/photos/tzBzc7NBN4cZ7Siu9
which discusses how to categorize research into theoretical, descriptive,
historical or applied linguistics. According to them, we should look at the
mode of inquiry or the product of research whether it is theory, description,
history or application. Here are my questions.

1) Is a research work that aims at developing THEORIES in sociolinguistics
classified as theoretical linguistics?
2) Is a research work that aims at developing METHODS in applied linguistics
classified as theoretical linguistics?
3) Is a research work that aims at APPLYING linguistic theories and methods to
ESL pedagogical development classified as applied linguistics?

Thank you for your advice.
