Subject: Call for Book Chapers

Three decades ago, Alastair Pennycook (1989) perceptively observed that
English language education “is involved in a complex nexus of social,
cultural, economic, and political relationships” (p. 590). He also noted that
such a view “has done little so far to challenge the positivist and
progressivist orthodoxies of linguistics and applied linguistics” (p. 612).
Therefore, he suggested that “rather than trying to understand our practice
according to some form of totalizing or universal discourse, we need to
recognize the complexities of language teaching and its contexts, and strive
to validate other local forms of knowledge about language and teaching” (p.
613). Pennycook continued to highlight such cultural, social, and political
understandings of language (education) and has discussed several related
notions such as critical literacy, critical pedagogy, critical applied
linguistics, discourses of colonialism, performativity, and locality, in the
area of language education (1990, 1994, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2004, 2010).
However, sociopolitical understandings of language teaching and learning are
still far from a fully functioning and influential status in mainstream
perceptions and practices of English language education worldwide, despite the
few, but important works that have shed light on the issue and redefined and
reconceptualized studying English language education, as theorized and
practiced, by micro and macro level agents and agencies.

This volume intends to, explore how English language education worldwide is
masked behind ideology, which is embedded in multiple discursive layers, how
these ideologies inform overt and covert policies at national levels and
beyond, and how such ideologies and policies transform into practices that
shape the contexts in which they exist in for good or bad. The particular
conception of ideology we find specifically contributive in envisioning the
contributions to this volume is in line with Teun van Dijk’s view of the term
as relatively stable most fundamental belief systems in any social involvement
that direct and control collectively shared perspectives, perceptions, and
practices(van Dijk, 1995, 1998, 2004, 2006).Possible issues for exploration
include, but are not limited to the following:

- How is English language education ideologically constructed and
deconstructed in English language education contexts worldwide?
- What ideologies govern and control English language education in different
institutional and national contexts around the world?
- What mechanisms are used to turn English language education ideologies into
overt and covert policies and practices in different parts of the world?
- How do areas such as assessment, materials, instruction, and teacher
education influence and how are they influenced by ideologically driven
policies and practices?
- How can the English language and English language education ideologies and
policies be most fruitfully researched?
- What are the implications of investigating English language education
ideologies and policies for advancing sociopolitical understandings inthe
field?
