Description:

The Department of Linguistics, University of British Columbia, invites
applications for a one-year Postdoctoral Fellowship in Semantics, to commence
no later than September 1, 2017. The successful candidate must hold a PhD (or
expect to have successfully defended prior to the position start date) and
must be within five years of having been awarded the PhD degree at the start
of the position.

This postdoctoral position is partially funded by a SSHRC Insight Grant on
“Tense and aspect systems in human language: Evidence from Salish,
Tsimshianic, Na-Dene and Austronesian.” The Postdoctoral Fellow will be
expected to participate actively in this SSHRC-funded research project.
Expertise in the areas of tense and/or aspect is an advantage, as is
experience with fieldwork and/or research on understudied languages. Previous
experience with the language families indicated in the grant’s title is not
required.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will also be expected to teach three courses,
including one graduate seminar in semantics on a topic of their choice, one
upper-level undergraduate course in semantics or pragmatics, and a third
course to be determined. There will also be opportunities for the Postdoctoral
Fellow to interact with UBC colleagues on research and teaching. Information
about the Department and faculty research can be found on our website,
http://linguistics.ubc.ca. The salary for this position is CAD $50,000/year
plus benefits. There will be some support for research-associated costs,
including conference travel.

Applicants should submit a single .pdf file containing the following items (in
the order listed): a curriculum vitae, a one-page statement of research plans,
up to 2 sample publications, and evidence of teaching experience and
effectiveness. In addition, applicants should arrange for three confidential
letters of reference to be sent directly to:
Edna Dharmaratne, Administrator, Department of Linguistics, The University of
British Columbia (see email address for applications below). Completed
applications and reference letters must be received by May 12, 2017. Please
include “postdoc search” in the email subject line. For questions about the
position, please contact Professor Lisa Matthewson (see contact information).

This position is subject to final budgetary approval. UBC hires on the basis
of merit and is strongly committed to equity and diversity within its
community. We especially welcome applications from visible minority group
members, women, Aboriginal persons, persons with disabilities, persons of
minority sexual orientations and gender identities, and others with the skills
and knowledge to productively engage with diverse communities. All qualified
candidates are encouraged to apply.
