Assistant Professor of English Language and Linguistics (0.6 - 0.8 FTE)

Responsibilities:

As Assistant Professor of English Language and Linguistics, you will be part
of a teaching and research team in the field concerned. You should have a PhD
and a strong track record in a specialisation relevant to (contemporary)
English language and linguistics, such as sociolinguistics or second language
acquisition. You will teach courses at both Bachelor’s and Master’s levels to
students in the department of English. In your teaching, the emphasis will be
on theory and praxis of English linguistics, including courses in language
proficiency and communication. You will supervise undergraduate and graduate
students in internships and in writing their theses. Your research will be
embedded in the Centre for Language Studies (www.ru.nl/cls/). CLS research
combines theoretical inspiration with a strong empirical and experimental
orientation, and is explicitly interdisciplinary in nature. Collaborative
partners include the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics and the
Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour, both on campus. Your
research should strengthen our research lines in English language and
linguistics, and you will be expected to play an active role in the research
conducted at the CLS and its partner institutes. 

Work environment:

The Faculty of Arts consists of ten departments in the areas of language and
culture, history, history of arts, linguistics and communication and
information studies, which together cater for about 2,400 students and
collaborate closely in teaching and research. 
  
Research at the Faculty of Arts is embedded in two research institutes: the
Institute for Historical, Literary and Cultural Studies (HLCS) and the Centre
for Language Studies (CLS). 

What we expect from you:

As a candidate for this position you: 
- have a doctoral degree in English linguistics and a strong research profile
in a specialisation relevant to the position;
- have a number of relevant publications in international publication outlets
to your name;
- are willing and able to supervise/co-supervise doctoral research effectively
and to a high standard;
- you are actively engaged in acquiring external research funding;
- are an inspiring and challenging teacher, with teaching experience at all
university levels;
- have an interest in administrative tasks and management;
- are a native speaker of English, or have a near-native command of English.

What we have to offer
- employment: 0.6 - 0.8 FTE;
- in addition to the salary: an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end-of-year
bonus;
- salary will depend on qualifications and experience, and will be between
€3,427 (scale 11) and €5,330 (scale 12) gross per month, based on full-time
employment;
- temporary appointment for three years;
- you will be appointed as an Assistant Professor, Level 1 (UFO profile:
Universitair Docent niveau 1) or Level 2 (UFO profile: Universitair Docent
niveau 2), depending on qualifications and experience.
