Meeting Description:

Grammaticalization is a research framework that investigates the process
whereby lexical items and even constructions gradually acquire grammatical
functions. Although the framework has been applied to the study of the
grammaticalization processes in many languages of the world, including many
African languages, it is yet to be fully applied to the study of many Nigerian
languages. Hence, the need for this workshop.

Date: 26 and 27 September, 2017
Venue: Faculty of Arts, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (Nigeria)

The workshop aims at introducing the grammaticalization framework and its
potentials to researchers of Nigerian languages.  It shall take the form of a
crash course, divided into two main modules. The first shall be the
theoretical module that introduces the grammaticalization framework and the
various theoretical issues it has given rise to. The second is the practical
module, which shall involve the demonstration of the application of the
framework to the investigation of the grammaticalization process in various
languages.

Call for Papers: 

We invite presentations that provide the highly needed theoretical and
practical insight into the grammaticalization framework. We invite abstract
submissions for presentations (40-minutes presentation plus 20-minutes
discussion). We welcome especially, depth of reflection and simplicity in the
presentation. The abstracts should not be more than one A4 sized page and
should clearly specify which of the two modules of the workshop it addresses.
It should also contain an outline of the presentation in the form of bullet
points. Send your abstracts to: c.uchechukwu at unizik.edu.ng and
neduchi at gmail.com before 30 August, 2017.

It is expected that those whose abstracts have been accepted shall attend the
workshop and present their papers. The acceptance of an abstract implies the
provision of hotel accommodation only; it does not imply the provision of
travel or feeding costs within and outside Nigeria.
