Specialty Areas: Applied Linguistics; Language Acquisition; Language education

Description:

Within the Faculty of Humanities’ leading research area Second Language and
Bilingualism, funds have been made available for a postdoctoral fellow in
Language Education with focus on L3 learning, which we hereby announce. L3
learning is defined as learning of a language when the person knows one or
more langauges in addition to the native language. Within the area of L3
learning, the effect of multilingualism on learning of new languages is
investigated. At the Department of Language Education, research in L3 learning
is conducted in many projects, chiefly touching crosslinguistic influences
from a psycholinguistic perspective as well as teaching modern languages in
the Swedish school context. The project described in the applicant’s project
plan should contribute to the department’s L3 research.

The position mainly involves individual research in the named area along with
up to 20% departmental work. The postdoctoral fellow is expected to be engaged
in the department’s research and initiate research projects, chiefly by
applying for research funding. The postdoctoral fellow will also be expected
to publish articles in international scientific publications to further the
department’s international profile in the area of L3 acquisition and thus
contribute to consolidation and broadening of L3 research at the department.

Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research.
Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree in a linguistic
subject or an equivalent degree from another country. As a general requirement
the applicant will be expected to be able to have the ability to work well
with others in addition to the ability to complete the requirements of the
position.

The degree should have been completed no more than three years before the
deadline for applications. An older degree may be acceptable under special
circumstances, which may involve sick leave, parental leave, clinical
attachment, elected positions in trade unions, or similar.

In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research
skills, particularly within the field of L3 learning. International contacts
and international experience are also of merit. Further, documented teaching
ability as well as demonstrated ability to communicate research results will
be highly valued. A teaching degree or equivalent experience of language
teaching is meritorious.

The position involves full-time employment for a maximum of two years, with
the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date
2017-11-01 or as per agreement.

Stockholm University strives to be a workplace free from discrimination and
with equal opportunities for all.
