About the role:
We have an exciting opportunity for a Software Developer within the
Dictionaries Division. You will work in a team developing language technology
solutions to generate or enhance linguistic datasets of a variety of types,
and processing unstructured linguistic text in different languages, among
other tasks. The results are aimed to be used both internally by the
Dictionaries editorial team, and externally as products of licensing interest
to third parties.

You will work in a cross-functional agile team and be part of an expanding
digital business. We’re looking for someone who relishes a challenge and is
willing to contribute to the team and learn on the job. Partnering with
internal and external stakeholders in a "start-up" culture, you will
contribute to create complex, efficient, and maintainable solutions within
time, quality and cost constraints, and enjoy the benefit of seeing the real
time impact of your successful delivery.

Responsibilities will include:
- Successful delivery of software to provide new business capabilities around
language and lexical data;
- Development, testing and documenting of new and amended software and systems
from supplied specifications in accordance with agreed standards;
- Collaborating on team-based standards for programming tools and techniques;
- Monitoring the field to gain knowledge and understanding of emerging
software technologies and techniques;
- Contributing to solutions and systems architecture;
- Identifying new areas of software process improvement within the
organisation.
- Assessing and analysing build and release components;
- Identifying new areas of software process improvement within the
organisation.

About you:
We expect you to have a good understanding of software development, DB
systems, and possibly also APIs. You should enjoy problem-solving and sharing
what you have learnt as well as learning from your peers. You should
appreciate working on a variety of things and using different technologies,
and be capable to pick the appropriate tool for the issue at hand.

To be successful in this role, you must demonstrate:
- A degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science or similar.
- Proven software development in Python and Java.
- Experience in relational database systems.
- Some familiarity in architecture frameworks and systems administration.
- Competency in Git, Subversion, or similar source control and dependency
management.
- Behaviour-driven development and/or Test-driven development.
- Eagerness to work with linguistic data; experience in that area will be a
plus.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Effectiveness in the transfer of technical expertise to colleagues.
- Interest in expanding knowledge and learning new skills.

Desirable:
- Previous experience with data mining techniques (machine learning,
statistical analysis, etc.).
- Familiarization with non-SQL databases.
- Aquitance with build (Ant, Maven, etc.) and continuous integration tools
(Jenkins, Hudson, etc.).
- Some experience in utilising big data technologies such as Spark or Hadoop.
- Previous work with Agile methodologies.
