About the role:

The Dictionaries Division publishes the flagship online products Oxford
English Dictionary (OED) and oxforddictionaries.com, leads innovation in
digital lexical publishing and licensing working with the world’s largest
technology and information providers, and is launching new initiatives
including the Oxford Global Languages (OGL) programme which will develop
digital lexical resources with communities across a wide range of languages.

The Dictionaries Technology Group within the Division is in charge of
designing and deploying technical solutions to support internal editorial
business as well as provide new business capabilities around language and
lexical data.

We are looking for a graduate (or equivalent) with expertise in the fields of
Artificial Intelligence, Natural Language Processing, Computational
Linguistics or related, to work on a project for developing methodologies and
infrastructure to map senses across dictionaries.

You will work in a cross-functional Agile team and be part of an expanding
digital business. You will therefore have the opportunity to build
professional experience in a technology team that enjoys the advantages of
working in a “start-up” culture but within a solid and stable company.
Moreover, you will be able to benefit from seeing the real time impact of your
successful delivery.

Responsibilities will include:
- Design and experimentation of methodologies for linking information across
dictionaries at the sense level.
- Development, testing, and documenting in accordance with agreed standards.
- Collaborating on team-based standards for programming tools and techniques.
- Contributing to solutions and systems architecture.

Please note: this is a part-time, fixed term contract for 6 months, with the
possibility of extension to 9 months. The hours will be between 15-20 per
week, depending on the requirements of the successful candidate. This
opportunity may suit candidates that are still studying and looking for
part-time work.

About you:
To be successful in this role you must have:
- A degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence.
- Familiarity with the field of Natural Language Processing or related,
preferably concerning the semantics level of information.
- Experience with quantitative and machine learning-based approaches.
- Programming skills in Python.
- Strong written and verbal communication.
- Effectiveness in the transfer of technical expertise to colleagues.
- Interest in expanding knowledge and learning new skills.

Desirable:
- Some familiarity with frameworks and approaches for working with big data
(e.g., Hadoop, MapReduce, etc.).
- Competency in Git, Subversion, or similar source control and dependency
management.
- Previous work with Agile methodologies.
