Job Location: Oxford, United Kingdom
Web Address: www.creativeml.ox.ac.uk
Job Title: Postdoctoral Research Assistant
Job Rank: Post Doc

Specialty Areas: Psycholinguistics; Metaphor

Description:

The AHRC-funded Creative Multilingualism programme is conducting research on
the interaction between multilingualism and creativity, and rethinking the
identity of Modern Languages. We are seeking a post-doctoral researcher to
contribute expertise in psycholinguistics to the Creative Power of Metaphor,
one of the programme’s seven research strands.

The strand looks at the role of metaphor as a phenomenon that mediates between
thought, language and action, and the research will be informed by the fields
of cognitive linguistics, rhetoric and literary studies. The project’s
objective is to enrich interdisciplinary understanding of metaphor, and in
particular investigate the implications of linguistic diversity for the theory
and practice of metaphor.

You will contribute to the design and execution of the research, collaborating
with Professor Katrin Kohl on her research focused on metaphor and its
contribution to the nexus between creativity and multilingualism, and
Professor Aditi Lahiri, Director of the Language and Brain Laboratory in the
Faculty of Linguistics, Philology and Phonetics. You will set up and conduct
psycholinguistic experiments designed to test and explore aspects relevant to
metaphor, working under the direction of relevant staff in the Laboratory.
Your role will include identifying innovative ways to present research
results, including writing blog posts and contributing to the programme’s
media presence. You will represent the strand at external meetings, and
facilitate collaboration within both the strand and the broader Creative
Multilingualism programme. In addition, you will help organise workshops,
conferences, and public engagement events.

You will have a good first degree, a doctorate in linguistics or
psycholinguistics, and a research interest in metaphor including familiarity
with the theoretical field. You will have experience with eye-tracking and
EEG, and be willing to receive further training in methods of psychological
and/or psycholinguistic experimentation. In addition, you will have excellent
written and spoken English, detailed knowledge of at least one other language,
and evidence of an interest in linguistic diversity. Familiarity with a
non-European language would be advantageous.

This fixed-term post is available on a full or part-time (minimum 0.5 FTE)
basis, starting as soon as possible. The length of the post depends on the
FTE. At 1 FTE the duration would be 18 months. The maximum length is until
30 June 2020. You will be based in the Faculty of Medieval and Modern
Languages, Oxford.
Applications should be made online, and you will be required to upload a CV, a
supporting statement and the names and addresses of two referees as part of
your online application.
