Subject: Data Collection on Quantity and Degree Expressions

Dear all,

I am currently collecting data on the cross-categorical distribution of
quantity and degree expressions (like English very, (very) much, a lot or
French très and beaucoup). As such data are often not systematically included
in grammar books, I am looking for native speakers who would be willing to
translate (and rudimentarily gloss) a couple of sentences/phrasesinto their
native language. The relevant examples are:

(i) very tall boy [degree expression + attributive modifier]

(ii) The son is much taller than bis father. [degree expression + comparative]

(iii) much water [quantity expression + mass noun]

(iv) many books [quantity expression + count noun]

(v) The boy loves his mother a lot/very much. [degree expression + verb]

(vi) The boy went to the market/cinema a lot. [degree/quantity expression +
verb -> indended meaning 'He went to the market/cinema often]

The interesting question is whether it is possible to use one and the same
degree/quantity expression in all six examples or whether different
expressions have to be used.

Any language data are welcome and I would be very thankful to anyone
supporting me with language data. In case of interest, you can send the data
via email to fleischhauer-at-phil.uni-duesseldorf.de .

Thank you very much!
