Date: 20-Apr-2018 - 22-Apr-2018
Location: Providence, RI, USA
Contact Person: Elijah A. Edelman
Meeting Email: eedelman at ric.edu
Web Site: https://lavenderlanguages.wordpress.com/

Linguistic Field(s): Anthropological Linguistics; Applied Linguistics; General Linguistics; Sociolinguistics

Call Deadline: 15-Nov-2017

Meeting Description:

The Lavender Languages Conference series has a rich history of examining
language use and representation in relation to lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans*,
heterosexual and/or queer life, as well as language and sexuality more
broadly. The Conference defines discussions of “language” as including all
areas of semiosis, including pronunciation, lexical choice, grammar,
semantics, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, (critical) discourse analysis, and
the analysis of communication in various text genres, modes (spoken, written,
signed, multimodal, non-verbal) and media. Historical, literary, and
descriptive studies are welcomed, as are performance-centered presentations
and poster displays. While the language of presentation is English, research
on languages other than English are welcomed and encouraged.

Call for Papers:

The conference program has always included papers addressing a wide range of
topics, and we hope to see that diversity maintained at Lav25. We invite
abstracts for presentations which explore site-specific relationships between
language and sexuality within broader contexts of social, cultural,
linguistic, and gender-sexuality theories. This year, papers and panels that
address future directions for language and sexuality inquiry are particularly
welcomed.

The Lav25 website (https://lavenderlanguages.wordpress.com) provides a list of
panels being organized to which you are invited to submit an abstract. Please
contact David Peterson (conference program coordinator;
davidpeterso1 at unomaha.edu ) for more information regarding the abstract
submission.

Abstracts for individual papers and poster presentations should be no more
than 250 words, and should include the presentation title and the presenter’s
name, affiliation, and email address. Abstracts should describe the
paper’s/poster’s focus, research method, findings and ties to language and
sexuality interests.

Panel organizers are responsible for soliciting and selecting abstracts (4-8
papers), and then submitting a panel proposal. You are welcome to advertise a
call for submissions to your panel via our website, where we will have a
section entitled ‘Sessions under development’; please contact Elijah Edelman
(conference on-site coordinator; eedelman at ric.edu) to arrange for the posting.
Proposals for pre-organized panels should include an overall abstract (also
250 words) as well as titles and abstracts for all intended panel members.

Abstracts must be submitted using the EasyAbs system, available here:
http://linguistlist.org/easyabs/lavlang25

Deadline for individual abstracts and panel proposals: 15 November 2017

All proposals will be evaluated by the conference’s Scientific Committee based
on quality, significance, and relevancy to the conference’s themes. Presenters
will be notified of acceptance in January 2018.

All paper presentations, including those within organized sessions, will be a
maximum of 20 minutes, plus 10 minutes for discussion.
